Ways To Properly Maintain Your Teeth

Are you wanting to do better with your dental care? Have you had problems with taking care of your oral hygiene? If so, then you'll find this guide to be useful. Follow along and you'll figure out what you can do to be sure that any dental problem you have is taken care of.  Get a tongue scraper and use it every morning. This will clean your tongue and help remove bacteria. Your tongue will feel better and your mouth will not smell so bad. A tongue scraper is more effective than brushing your tongue with your tooth brush, and takes less time too.

Visit your dentist every six months or whenever you dentist feels as though you should visit. This will help you avoid having a major issue with your teeth. Also, you will be more comfortable with your dentist when you see him or her regularly. If you have a dental emergency or need some complicated procedure done, this is a very good thing.

Brush teeth gently. While it may seem like the best way to keep teeth clean is by brushing hard, it isn't true. Brushing too hard or with bristles that are too hard can cause pain, irritation, gum recession, and eventually loose teeth. To prevent this, use a brush with soft nylon bristles and use gentle, circular brushing motions when brushing.  If you have sensitive teeth, use a specially formulated toothpaste. A red flag that your teeth are sensitive is if it hurts when your teeth are exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Make sure you visit your dentist, and ask him or her for a diagnosis so that you can ensure it's not serious.

Make sure you spend a full two or three minutes brushing your teeth twice daily. To help you keep brushing, there are a couple of tricks you can use. You can buy an electronic toothbrush with a timer. Play a song that is 2 or 3 minutes long while you brush.  If you run out of toothpaste, baking soda and water can be an effective substitute. Simply mix in some water with a small amount of baking soda and use it just as you would toothpaste. An added benefit to using baking soda is that, along with neutralizing mouth odors, its abrasive nature can help with stain removal.

At Dominion Dental Care in Sterling, Virginia, we are ambitious about your teeth. Health and beauty are our goals with any dental procedure, including crowns and bridges. With damaged and missing teeth, crowns, and bridges provide the structure for a mouth filled with strong and healthy teeth, natural or not. No one will be able to tell.

Bridges and Crowns

A bridge in dentistry does much the same thing as its construction counterpart. It provides a structure that spans a gap. A dental bridge is designed to fill an open space between or beside your teeth.  Dental bridges prevent teeth from shifting and leading to problems with your bite or jaw and protect your existing teeth. One of 3 types of bridges is used to correct these concerns.

Our dentist puts in a fixed bridge to add a filler tooth to the gap between teeth. On either side of the filler tooth are crowns that attach to the dental bridge and hold it in place.

For missing front teeth, a Maryland bridge is often the best choice. This bridge is made up of filler that is attached to metal bands that are bonded to the teeth. Since the bands are made from tooth-colored resin, the dental bridge looks like your real teeth.

When there are teeth on only one side of the span, a cantilever bridge is the best option. With this procedure, the crowned teeth on one side are connected to a filler tooth to bridge the gap.

Dental Crowns

Decayed, damaged or cracked teeth require crowns for dental health. It is hard to chew and talk with a broken tooth, but once we have replaced the old tooth with a porcelain or metal crown, you can eat and talk easily.  Our family dentistry practice makes crowns out of porcelain, gold, acrylic resin, or a mixture of these materials. For the most natural-looking appearance, many people choose porcelain, but it may not last as long as dental crowns made of metal or acrylic.

Dental Implants

If one or more of your teeth are missing or damaged, you may want to check out dental implants. Great advances have been made in implant technology, and the process of having one or more placed is now easier and less expensive. Unfortunately, the cost is not usually covered by insurance.

Now that you've gone over this guide, it should be easy for you to start practicing good dental care. Just be sure that you reread this guide so that you know what you're doing. Everyone needs to worry about their dental care, so take care of any dental problems you have before they get worse.
