Walgreens and Express Scripts Dispute

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Most customers of Walgreens have probably already heard about the dispute between Walgreens and Express Script. For the past year, Walgreens has negotiated with Express Scripts to continue to be the pharmacy’s provider network but the negotiations were unsuccessful and on December 31st, 2011, the contract expired. As of January 1, 2012, Walgreens is no longer part of the Express Scripts network. All Walgreens pharmacies nationwide and Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York City area are no longer included in the Express Scripts pharmacy network. Express Scripts acts as a middleman between pharmacies providing health care service and employers and their health plans who pay for medications.

Who Will Be Affected? One of Express Scripts’ clients in particular that is affected by the split is Tricare, the health prescription drug program for the US military. Many pharmacy customers now have to go elsewhere to use their in-network pharmacy benefits for their meds.

In order to minimize the effect of this change of network, Walgreens is offering a special discount on annual membership for the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. An individual can join this special January promotion for only $5, or $10 for a family membership that covers everyone in your immediate family including a spouse, dependents 22 and younger and pets. Walgreens Prescription Savings Club members receive savings on over 8,000 brand name and all generic medications.
